Hey, I have been joined for a coffee and cake by Meg, the Author of the several books including The Alpha's Birthday Gift. She has agreed to come along and chat with me to give us a little insight into her world.
As always I will sort the coffee Meg, Tell us a little bit about your background and how you came to write M/M fiction?
I think it all began with the discovery of fanfiction. I’m not going to lie, I was young. Very young. About 12 or 13. I can’t even remember how I found it, but I just remembered that I wanted to read more Harry Potter and I learned of Harry/Hermione fiction being written, which in turn led me to fanfiction.net. There, I discovered Draco/Harry and I was shocked. Growing up in a small Aussie town, I never knew two men could love each other. But as I began reading out of curiosity, I realized how much it was no different from a man and a woman, and thus began my love of slash.
When I went to America for the first time in 2005, I found a book on the YA shelves of Barnes and Noble. It was called The Rainbow Boys by Alex Sanchez. I never knew there was original gay fiction, so I was excited. When I got home, I began searching the internet for more and I ended up buying paperbacks of the stories I craved to read, like Without Reservations by JL Langley. And that’s how I began writing. I always wrote, but never had the confidence to attempt sending something to a publisher. But that changed in 2015, when I sent my North to Zombieville to DSP and was accepted!
Another young starter but it's good you found M/M, I always find it interesting to know how writers start out in this business. What would you say is your greatest success story so far?
I think it would be the fact that I was published. It’s probably such a small accomplishment to some people, but to me, it meant the world. It meant that I could be published and I could dream of bigger things, like people loving my stories.
That's great and such an achievement. Now we all need a little help when we start out, I have met some fantastic Indie Authors who have given me good advice and helped keep me focused.
Who in the M/M community has help you on your journey?
Everyone. And I say that truthfully. The thing I love about the MM community is that they truly are a family. We have our ups and downs, but we always take care of each other. But other than that, I have to say Renae Kaye. I remember meeting her at a Melbourne author meet-up in 2015 (or was it 14? I can’t remember anymore) and I remember seeing all these amazing, sweet authors and KNOWING I wanted to be one of them.
Fantastic, there are so many helpful people in this community.
Do you still have a day job or are you a full time Author?
I still have a day job. I work in a delicatessen in a popular supermarket here in Australia. I have a degree in psychology too, but unfortunately that doesn’t mean it’s easy for me to find a job in the field. It’s very frustrating. But my dream is be write full time.
Let's hope your dream comes true and you continue sharing your wonderful stories.
Whats is your favourite curse word?
I may be boring, but it has to be the oldie, but goodie: Fuck. It’s a great stress reliever! Lol.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
I have to say I’d love to be something interesting, like a radio host. But I think my mind would go blank on things to say. Lol.
Ok, here's one I'm not sure I should ask but I'm going to anyway on a scale of one to ten, how weird are you?
10. How is this even a question
Lol your my first 10 from all the coffee and cakes so far, good for you.
The M/M community has its up’s and down’s. But what are some specific things you would advise newbies to watch out for in the community?
People who try to bring you down. I won’t lie, while the MM community is a family, there are also the bad sheeps in that family. If you’re passion is to write, then write. But also take the critiquing advice of your family. That’s the only way we can get better at what we do.
Thats great advice, I have to agree there will always be the bad sheeps but never let anyone bring you down enjoy what you do and be proud. Let me throw in a couple more quick fire questions for you.
What is your favourite TV show ?
Shadowhunters. But it’s been cancelled and I’ve already cried over it. But, I got to meet two of their stars in Sept! I was so excited!
I must have missed this you and Harper have mention it, maybe I should check it out.
What was the last movie you watched at the cinema ?
What was the last movie you watched at the cinema?
Crazy Rich Asians. It was AMAZING.
That was Harry's fave as well I still haven't seen this one.
I have to say meeting you today has been good and you are doing very well so far, What is coming up for you on the horizon?
Oh, so much. I’ve really put my head down and butt up, and I plan on making the end of 2018 my year! I have plenty of books to keep an eye out for and I can’t wait to share them!
That will keep you busy, lastly before we say goodbye, How do our visitors get in touch with you?
Mostly Facebook. You can find me here: https://www.facebook.com/meg.bawden. Don’t be scared to approach me and ask questions, or if you just want to talk, come say hello! I don’t bite!
Thanks for joining me and Meg for Coffee & Cake. If you have enjoyed our chat join me soon when I meet up with A.E. Ryecart very soon..
Books from Meg Bawden
Til Death Do Them Part - Meg Bawden
Blurb:
Rhys Turner's world crashed and burned around him on Halloween in 2015. The loss of his fiance, Kian, left Rhys lost and unwilling to move on or seek closure. He spent the next two years wandering in the fog of grief, until Halloween rolled around again and brought Kian back with it. For one night. One night was never going to be enough, though, and Rhys can't let him go. He takes Kian and flees the Grim Reaper. Spending his life on the run seems like an easy trade if it keeps Kian with him, but Rhys didn't count on how hard it was to run from Death. Not even the help of a witch and sheer pig-headed determination is enough when Kian starts fading a little more each day. Death's hellhounds are nipping at their heels and the only thing Rhys knows for sure is that he can't lose Kian again, no matter the cost. This story is a part of a series, but is a complete story arc. It has a HEA and has explicit sexual content between two men. It is intended for audiences 18+.
