DAVID - Carols & Mince Pies

Two weeks before Christmas.

The sound of Christmas music echoes from the shops nearby as I look at the window display, my breath mists in the evening air. My thick hand knitted rainbow scarf is tight around my neck its frayed ends blowing in the chilling wind. My woolly hat pulled down snugly over my ears. I catch a glimpse of my reflection in the window and laugh at myself.

I wonder at times what Bradley sees in me. My chubby body looking even bulkier in my blue winter puffer jacket. He must see something that I don’t that’s for sure. But then he said he loved me in New York and he said the words first so he must have meant them.

There’s no doubt his eyes remind me of those words every time he looks into mine making my heart skip a beat.

The Christmas window display has me mesmerised as I watch the miniature carousel spin. It is as wonderful as Bradley said. The model huts and lodges strategically placed on the fake snow that covers every inch of the beautifully crafted design. Small lights twinkle like stars in the windows of wooden lodges perched on mountains at the back of the Christmas scene.

“It’s amazing,” I say as I turn to face Bradley.

“I thought you would love it. When I walked by this morning, I knew I had to bring you to see it.”

“I’m glad you did.”

I feel Bradley’s gloved hand touch against mine as our fingers entwine together, he squeezes my hand. The warmth of his touch rapidly spreading through my body. His eyes fix on mine. That look telling me again how much he loves me.

People rushing past us with bags full of gifts, the madness of Christmas shopping has taken over the High Street.

He continues holding my hand and leans in closer, his breath warms my lips as his own trace lightly over mine. Not quite a kiss just a little tease of their intention as they move away.

“You know you’re my world now,” He whispers softly keeping his eyes fixed firmly on mine. I’m oblivious to the other shoppers walking past as all that matters are the two of us, Bradley's words, his closeness, his desire for me. Even the coldness of the evening is engulfed by the warmth he spreads in my heart.

“I know,” I reply, my voice as breathless as his words are making me feel.

I close my eyes as his lips return to mine their warmness stealing away the chill of mine, his tongue licks my lower lip then pushes into my mouth. The kiss passionate, stoking the fire deep within me as he hugs me tight.

“I love you, David, you have changed my world so much. Work was all I had before you and now even that seems unimportant. You’ve stolen my heart.”

My heartbeat slows to a deep thud in my chest as I stare into his eyes. His words tear away the layers of protection I built around my heart during my time with my ex Craig. “I love you, Bradley, you’ve made me complete.”

He gives me another soft kiss, cuddling me tight to him. “Come on let’s have a walk and see what else is going on this evening,” he says.

Still holding my hand tight we walk along Oxford Street past several shops. They are all brightly lit with Christmas lights and decorations. The smell of roasting chestnuts lingers in the air as we pass a man selling them. His exposed fingertips blackened from the chestnuts.

I can hear the sound of carol singers in the distance. Their voices getting louder as we approach a crowd that has gathered around them. As a few people walk away, we manage to wiggle our way to their place in the crowd.

There is a group of at least twenty people singing, they are all wearing purple sweatshirts Bloomsbury Charity Choir is emblazoned on the front of them. The harmony is beautiful as they sing Silent Night their voices loud and proud.

I notice children walking along the front of the crowd handing out mince pies to people whilst they stand and listen to the choir. A couple more children are holding purple buckets, skipping around collecting donations for the charity. As more people drift away, we move to the front of the crowd.

A little boy appears as if from nowhere holding a plate of mince pies.

“Would you like one sir?” He asks Bradley, in a sweet innocent voice.

“Yes, thank you,” He replies, taking one of the pies from the plate.

“How about you sir? I made them myself,” His angelic voice touches me, but his eyes tug at my heart they look tearful from the cold. Even though I don’t like mince pies, I take one off the plate and smile.

“Thank you,” I say.

“You’re welcome, I hope you enjoy them,” he says as he walks back towards the choir, I notice he has a slight limp.

Bradley eats his pie in two bites. “Are you going to eat yours?” He asks and gives me one of his cheeky grins.

“No, you can have it,” I hand him the pie and within seconds it’s gone.

“They were delicious.”

Before I can comment another boy appears in front of us. Holding his purple bucket out as high as he could in front of him. Bradley pulls a twenty-pound note out of his pocket and drops it into the bucket.

“Thank you, sir,” the boy says, then skips away swinging his bucket by his side.

“That was generous of you.”

“It looks like a worthy cause and it is almost Christmas:”

The choir is singing deck the halls now and the crowd has started to sing along. Christmas cheer is all around us.

“This is wonderful, I think this is going to be the best Christmas I have had in years,” I say.

“Come with me,” he says squeezing my hand and pulling me away from the crowd into a side alley off the street.

“It will be our first Christmas together,” he says.

I smile at him and squeeze his hand as he looks at me.

“I’m assuming you will be coming to mine for Christmas?” He says.

“Do you want me to spend it with you?” Why I’m asking that I have no idea.

“Yes, well with me and my sister and her family, as they are coming to mine for Christmas this year. That’s if you want to?”

My heart leaps with excitement, he wants me to meet his sister. I bring my hand up to my chin and stroke it. “Let me think about that,” I say with a smirk. Bradley’s face takes on a thrown as he stares back at me. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else than with you my gorgeous man.”

“Well then, it will be the best Christmas ever,” He replies.

The choir is still singing in the distance, he pulls me into his arms crushing me against his body. His lips meet mine as we lose ourselves in a passionate embrace. I can feel his excitement growing against my leg.

“I think we should go home for some privacy,” I say in between kisses.

“I think you’re right, let’s go.”

I adjust myself in my boxers before taking Bradley’s hand as we walk back to his house. I wonder if tonight will be in his bed or in the basement room.

The End.
