Thanks for joining me Sadie for a coffee and cake, if Sadie is new to you, she is the Author of the very successful Elemental Evidence Series. I managed to get her to come along and chat with me to give us a little insight into her world.

So, while I get the coffee Sadie, Tell us a little bit about your background and how you came to write M/M fiction?

I’m from a solid blue-collar family background. Me and my parents and grandparents all worked hard for a living and I grew up in a council house with few things in the way of luxury. I was lucky to have parents who thought outside the ‘work at Tesco, get married, have kids’ box for us and they encouraged us to learn and think for ourselves. Mum taught me to read when I was about three or so and my Dad used to make up songs and stories for us so I guess creativity was always in my blood. I was always a tomboy and by the time I was ten or eleven I knew that I was androgynous, or even trans male, though I didn’t have those terms for my identity back then. It was just something that I would ‘grow out of’ according to my parents.

But I didn’t. And when I started writing seriously, in my teens, my identity was reflected in my stories. Mum often asked me “Why don’t you write more girls in your stories? Why are they all about boys?” The truth of the matter was that I didn’t feel like a girl. My best friend, growing up was a boy and I only befriended a few girls at school. I didn’t ‘feel’ like a girl.

So, the stories were my escape. No one looking at me now would see the person I feel that I am. The boys in my books are little reflections of me.

Seems like you knew where you was heading from a young age, It's very interesting to know how writers start out in this business. What would you say is your greatest success story so far?

I kind of hope my greatest success is still to come but, so far, I’d say that getting Elemental Evidence into print has been a massive justification for all the long nights writing and trying not to fall asleep at work the day after. I was so happy the day I got a copy of Breathing Betrayal, the first book in the series, actually in my hands. At that moment, though I’d been telling people for years that I was a writer, I actually ‘felt’ like one.

Well you are definetly proving what a great writer you are. Now we all need a little help when we start out and there are a lot of helpful people in the M/M community.

Who in the M/M community has help you on your journey?

Just one? Wow, there are so many people. This is a brilliant community to exist in. For all the arguments and issues, it’s still an amazing place. Above all, I would probably have to thank the wonderful O J Cast and Lisa Arbitrary, and Gloria Lakritz of the Paranormal Romance Guild, who have been huge supporters of Elemental Evidence since the first book. They have all gone above and beyond to push Jake and Mari out into the world and win them new fans.

The lovely Diane Allen, who used to review for Hearts of Fire, reads and shares Everything! Thank you!

And Mari Cardenas of Bayou Book Junkie and Maryann Kafka from The Novel Approach have both been hardcore cheerleaders practically from the start.

I’d also love to say a massive thank you to Angel Martinez for her friendship and encouragement. She is one awesome person and an amazing writer too.

Finally, and most importantly of all, I couldn’t do any of this without my fellow scribe and soulmate, the fabulous Ms Bellora Quinn. <3

They are all new names to me, but I will look out for them, they sound like they deserve to be on my list of happy helpers.

Do you still have a day job or are you a full time Author?

I don’t at the moment. Until quite recently I worked full time in retail but the shop where I worked has gone into administration so I’m floating right now. Before that, I worked for many years in the library and archives services in Cambridge and in Lancashire where I grew up. I love library work but the government here has cut public libraries’ funding to the bone and it’s very hard to find jobs there right now.

I know the feeling I work for local goverment as well and the cut backs are being felt across the board, here’s a couple of quick fire questions for you.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

I’d quite like to be a conservator, I think. I love old things and I also love putting broken things back together and making them work again. I think that would tug a lot of my chains.

What sound or noise do you love?

This is kind of generic but I love the sound of live music, especially my beloved Suede. Nothing excites me more than the sound of one of their intros cutting through the darkness of a packed venue and the answering screams of me and my fellow addicts as we dive into yet another amazing show.

Ok, here's the cheeky one on a scale of one to ten, how weird are you?

Hahah! I love this question. My stock answer is usually “define normal?”.

I would say that if you asked me, I’d tell you I was probably about a 2, or a 3 on a good day. If you ask anyone else, they’d probably score me quite a bit higher.

Maybe we should ask Bellora Quinn she must know you well.

The M/M community sometimes seems to be more down than up. I certainly see a lot of it around facebook. But what are some specific things you would advise newbies to watch out for in the community?

On social media, right now, be careful who you add. There are a lot of folks out there that are not who or what they seem. It’s impossible to vet everyone but always check profiles before adding. It sounds paranoid, I know, but not everyone has our best interests at heart.

And try not to be controversial for the sake of attention. Debate is good but arguments happen easily here, we are a massively diverse bunch and even though we’re mostly lovely people, we are all pretty protective of our own niches. It rarely ends well.

Thats great advice there is certainly a very thin line between debate and argument on Facebook.

Let me throw in a couple more quick fire questions for you.

What was the last book you read?

I’m working though my backlist right now. Been reading the Whyborne & Griffin series by Jordan L Hawk. Embarrassingly, it’s taken me ages to get around to this excellent series and I’m about half way through Stormhaven at the moment.

I’m also reading a non-MM, The Tightrope Walkers, an adult contemporary novel by David Almond, who wrote the amazing Skellig and one of my favourite YA books, Kit’s Wilderness.

The last book I finished was Blind Man’s Wolf, book 1 in Amelia Faulkner’s Tooth and Claw series, which I’m reading as part of the build up to her new Inheritance novel, Rites of Winter. I love Amelia’s writing and Inheritance is one of my favourite series at the moment.

Thanks for the recommendation I must check them out.

What was the last album you brought?

I’ve not actually bought much music this year, which is unusual for me. I bought the purple vinyl reissue of Gary Numan’s Dance LP earlier this year for my husband’s 50th Birthday. We both love Numan and also went to see his show at Worthing Assembly Rooms in the summer. The last album I bought for myself was probably Songs of Other England by Artmagic, who are Sean MacGee who writes and plays with Alison Moyet’s touring band, and Richard Oakes the wonderful guitarist with Suede.

Gary Numan thats a big yes from me, I'm a huge 80's music fan, we will have to chat some more about that another day.

I have to say meeting you today has been good and you are doing well in your career so far, What is coming up for you on the horizon?

Ooh, lots of things.

On a personal level, I’m job hunting so things could go in any direction there.

Musically, hubby and I have Garbage (who we’ve never seen live before) coming up at Brixton Academy in a couple of weeks, and Suede in concert at Hammersmith Apollo next month promoting a new album, about which I am ridiculously excited.

On the book front, I’m rehashing some old material for a fantasy series called Legacy of the Moon, about a world powered by magic and the people who are able to control and use that power for good or ill.

Bellora and I are knuckling down to write book 5 in the Elemental Evidence series, which doesn’t have a name yet. It’s set in Michigan, in the USA, unlike the first four books, which is a bit of a departure for me. I’m looking forward to seeing how it spins out.

We also need to get some work done on the sequel to our summer release, Demon Familiar, which I’m calling Runaway Fae in my head, though Bellora may have things to say about that!
